Xanthelasma; are lesions that occur as a result of yellow-colored fat accumulation under the skin around the eyes. They are completely harmless but aesthetically unpleasant. These lesions appear yellow in color due to the accumulation of cholesterol within them.
There may be certain conditions and individuals predisposed to xanthelasma:
– Those with high blood cholesterol levels
– Individuals who are obese
– People with diabetes
– Those with heart and circulatory disorders
– Smokers
– Individuals with hypertension, and these lesions are more commonly observed in females.
Can Xanthelasma be Treated with Medication?
Unfortunately, xanthelasma does not go away with medication. Even in cases associated with high cholesterol, these lesions do not shrink when blood lipid levels return to normal.
The most effective treatment method for xanthelasma is surgical removal of these lesions, along with the affected skin, in a manner that conforms to the natural lines of the eyelids and leaves no visible scars. Some small lesions can be removed using a Plexr laser device.
These lesions typically appear on the inner side of the eyelids near the nose and can sometimes reoccur from a different location after removal. They are not contagious or caused by microbial factors but result from the improper accumulation of cholesterol fats.
